Residents of Maine: Urge the Secretary of State to alter a misleading ballot question! In February, Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting submitted a petition to add a ballot question that could end the cruel and unsporting practices of baiting, hounding, and trapping bears. Nearly 80,000 Mainers signed the petition, clearly demonstrating the strong, state-wide support for this initiative. However, Maine Department of the Secretary of State’s office has now proposed language for the ballot question that is unclear to voters. It asks: Do you want to ban bear hunting using bait, traps or dogs except to protect property, public safety or for research? This language is confusing and could mislead voters to believe that the measure would ban all bear hunting, when it only bans three specific and particularly merciless tactics. Instead, the question should read: Do you want to prohibit the use of dogs, bait, or traps when hunting bears except under certain circumstances? A public comment period on the proposed language is open until next Monday, June 16, and we need you to write to the Secretary of State requesting a fair ballot question in November. Together, we can clear this latest hurdle in the fight to make Maine a more compassionate state for bears.
