Response from the author of the original article obesity is a disability. Clearly criticism is something that is not welcomed. Also not reading my full post properly was not something that was required. If losing weight is such a ‘doddle’ Emma, why are you still fat and have not managed to keep it off? And yes, if you become so heavy that you can’t walk it IS a physical problem and you CAN become disabled through it. Surgery is the easy way out? Would you say the same to a lung cancer patient who has been puffing away all his life and gets a transplant? Should that person just die? If your BMI is over 40 you have a less than 5% chance of losing your excess weight and an even less chance of keeping it off. Maybe you think you are special but I don’t think I am particularly. After a decade of trying I decided to save myself once and for all – the doctors gave me a life-span prognosis of another 15 years in the end. There is something that I have understood Emma. No amount of public self-hatred will gain you respect from people who despise this disorder because of what it stands for – a lack of control – something we all desire and struggle with at some point or another. Instead of desperately trying to fit in and failing at it miserably, maybe the answer lies in dissecting the politics that surround our food production in order to prevent this terrible disease from further inflicting generations to come. For you though, it may already be too late – as it was for me. Bariatric surgery is the only proven method for long term weight loss if you have a very high BMI. If you believe you can do it alone, which would be like winning the lottery, then good luck to you! I look forward to seeing you on the cover of a magazine someday as you show off your ‘unsightly fat pants’ to the world.
