Responsible tourism campaign begins! Umbrella organization of Trekking Agencies register under government of Nepal - Trekking Agencies’ Association Nepal (#TAAN) has started its cleaning-up drive along the trekking trails. In its first step, the association launched a clean-up campaign on the two trekking trails of famous #Langtang Region on the occasion of World Environment Day, 2012. The campaign was organized from June 5 to 10. Under the cleanup campaign, two teams comprising 15 members in each took part voluntarily in the five-day campaign to pick up the garbage left on the trekking trails of the holy lake, #Gosainkunda and #KanjingGompa of Langtang Region. Amidst a press conference on Tuesday, TAAN informed that the teams collected quintals of garbage from the two trails which had brought to Kathmandu for its disposal. According to the team members, plastics, papers, tin, glass and garments were the main garbage found along the trails. Piles of under garments have found near Gosainkunda, an important pilgrimage among both Hindu and Buddhist. Thousands of pilgrims used to visit Gosainkunda to take a holly dip and most of them throw their underwear in the lake after taking a bath. According the executive board of TAAN, the main purpose of the clean-up campaign was to create awareness among the locals and trekkers about their responsibilities in keeping the trekking trail environmentally unaffected. TAAN has planning to launch similar campaign in the other trails by mobilizing the locals. The clean-up teams have also organized various awareness programs in the areas where school students and local communities attended.
