Resumé Feng Shui By Bonnie Gillespie First off, youre awesome. Seriously. Even if youre behind with this free, revolutionary year-end training series, youre digging in now, youre showing up when you can, youre being of service to the community of #SMFANinjas by sharing feedback, and youre *in this* because you know you want to start 2015 strong. So, thank you. And good for you. The ripple effects of this experience will astound you. Now, lets get your resumé in order. Heres the number one thing you need to know: Because you remember it all, YOU love your credits in a way that *no buyer* does. And since the audience for your resumé is a buyer, its time to adjust your mindset about your resumé. Im a J-School girl. One the things they teach at the Grady College of Journalism is the inverted pyramid. Thats a way of thinking about your writing in which you lead off with the badassiest stuff and taper off to the info thats okay to cut. Thats the presentation style thats right for your resumé: List everything in order of badassiest. No chronological order (thats a corporate construct -- and Hollywood aint corporate), no features first then shorts, no network TV first then cable or web -- its what is most badass FIRST. Youre dropping breadcrumbs down the path for how buyers should cast you next. Your action item: Clear clutter from your resumé. Anything that doesnt inform the buyer this is how to cast me next GOES unless its so badass that it has value. That means: Great director, festival cred, on-brand role youd nail again today... it can stay. Sentimental credits that dont lead buyers to understand where youre headed? OUT they go! Click the quotable above for a PDF template of a Starter Resumé that you can use to get your resumé format gorgeous for this homework. Want a Word version of this template or need higher-tier template downloads? Go here for six downloads youll use til the highest tier! Todays tweet: ALL credits on your resumé tell the story of your PAST. Only some credits tell the story of your FUTURE. @BonnieGillespie #SMFAninjas Id love to see tweets from you today about any credits you cut that felt like killing off babies to you. Ive been there. If youd like to share that you sacrificed a favorite credit in service of a resumé that feels more focused on how to cast you next, Id love to celebrate you! Its not easy, but its so damn ninja! Have a newly-formatted resumé youd like to tweet? Heck, do that too! #SMFAninjas celebrate you!
