(Distances in metres; Circle of Confusion is taken at 0·032 millimetres.) Review I’ve always felt that the Tele-Takumar 1:5.6/200 was a pretty darn good 200mm lens, but this chap outclasses it by lightyears. In fact, it gives my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM lens a serious run for its money — with a photo-finish required to determine the winner! The lens has eighteen aperture leaves. Yes, eighteen. Count ’em. 18! Technically the aperture forms an octadecagon, but in fact it looks round. Whereas a catadioptric lens produces doughnuts for bokeh, this lens creates the honey glazing on top. Optical quality is amazing. The four lens elements produce an image that outresolves the 10 megapixel sensor of my Canon EOS 1000D camera. It’s so sharp, you can shave with it. It has some CA at f/3·5, but then the lens hails from the late Fifties before multi-coating was invented. Anyway, stopping down to f/8 and using a good UV filter quickly fixes this. Indeed a rare gem that has very few peers. To paraphrase Crocodile Dundee: “Now this is a portrait lens.” Recommended: Yes Sample Photographs © Robert I. Sadler, 2011 References van Oosten, G. 1999.
