Retired Chief Justice Gurudas D. Kamat passed away today and his cremation was held at St Inez crematorium late this evening. Being the first Goan to be a High Court Chief Justice, he had a vast experience in the field of legal practice and judiciary, having practiced in various branches of law. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 10th August, 1962. For a brief period he practiced at Bombay and later shifted to Goa where he practiced since 1964. He was Prosecutor for the Government of Goa from 1967 to 1969. From 1980 onwards he represented the Customs and Central Excise Departments of the Government of India. Was also a member of the Senate and Faculty of Law of Bombay University from 1978 to 1980. He was appointed as a Judge of the Bombay High Court on 29 November 1983 and retired as Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court in January 1997. Currently engaged in judicial work relating to arbitration and conciliation, Justice Kamat was a very warm and gregarious personality. May his soul rest in peace.
