Returning to the research on the murder of William E. Annis in 1908: As many of you know, an important part of my personal research on the Annis family has been the service that our many Annis veterans have bravely given to our Nation. Whether that nation is the USA, Canada, England, Australia or New Zealand, these men and women of our family have sacrificed, served with honor and many have died protecting the freedoms we have. I have tried in the past to hunt down these men and women and show their family history and lineage, both to honor their service and to show people the roots from which these branches grew. Sometimes I am very frustrated because I run into a soldier, seaman or airman that I am unable to connect to a lineage or family. Such was the case of Russell Annis. Private Annis was a member of the 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on January 26, 1953. Private Annis was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Up until recently that was all the information I had on Russell. I have discovered that Russell was the grandson of the murdered William E. Annis. Russell was unmarried, was born May 31, 1933 in Auburn, Maine. He was the son of Howard R. Annis (1901-1959) and Margaret Emily (Nelson) Annis. Howard was the eldest son of William E. Annis and was only 7 years old when his father was murdered. Russell is buried at Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, New Jersey
