Review "The Dominion Post" (Tom Cardy) One Man Bannister is Mathew Bannister, a member of 80s band Sneaky Feelings and author of an eye-opening account of the ‘‘Dunedin sound’’ in his book Positively George Street. Less known is another called White Boys, White Noise: Masculinities and 1980s Guitar Rock. Bannister’s always kept a hand in, including bands the Dribbling Darts of Love and The Weather – but One Man Bannister is something else. What began life as a project with music students was transformed into Bannister interpreting The Beatles’ Revolver. He sticks to the track order, but half the fun is his different approach to each song. Some are cheeky, but effective. Yellow Submarine has a touch of reggae, Here There and Everywhere tips its hat at Dear Prudence off The White Album, Love You To becomes a sitar-free up tempo guitar number as if recorded by a garage rock band. For No One goes alt country. But what makes Evolver so satisfying is this never sounds like a gimmick. From a sublime left field Taxman to a very effective early 90s ‘‘Madchester’’ indie dance remake of Tomorrow Never Knows, Bannister shines. youtube/watch?v=qtCkfpcIoRE&feature=youtu.be&hd=1
