Reviewing BNPs policy necessary Sabir Ahmed Bangladesh liberation war started on March 26, 1971. This 9-month long war was against the marauding Pakistani forces. Al-Badr, Razakar and notorious Jamaat extended assistance and cooperation to the Pakistani forces. Soon after the emergence of Bangladesh, the country gained recognition as a democratic country. But democracy in Bangladesh suffered a jolt on August 15, 1975 when the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was brutally killed along with some family members. The country came under military dictatorship which continued till 1991. Thereafter, democratic process started and from 1991 to 2005, both BNP and Awami League came to power alternately. Again from 2006 to 2008 there was de-facto military rule in the country. After this the general elections were held in 2008.
