Reza Aslans No God But God; The Origins, Evolution and Future of Islam covers the pre-islam Meccan society, discusses the life of Prophet Mohammed briefly, touches upon in some detail, lives of first few caliphs and explains the different dominating ideologies within Islam. It also goes into details on the role this religion has played the in Middle-eastern nations. Importantly, books uncovers the diversity that exists within Muslim world, differences that run deep over the context of the holy book Quran, whether it was created by God or it co-exists with God and is eternal. This debate itself has wide implications. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Sufi order. Its detailed and has the same flavor as one may found in a sufi poem. I suggest this book. It sheds light on a philosophy that offers much to learn and about which we know so little.
