Rhoda Masella Dompierposted toSave St. Mary School in Bordentown, NJ THE TIMES OF TRENTON, LETTER TO THE EDITOR JUNE 10, 2013 Comfort heartbroken family of St. Mary School. This coming Friday, St. Mary School in Bordentown will close its doors for the last time. From the minute Bishop David O’Connell made this decision, the Diocese of Trenton has mishandled the closing every single step of the way. It started with the St. Mary families finding out the shocking news for the first time in the newspaper. It continued when a meeting with the bishop was promised to a well-meaning coalition of parents, and then denied. It continues even now, while broken-hearted teachers are frantically cleaning out the contents of their classrooms into dumpsters while maintaining a caring classroom atmosphere, because the diocese has ordered that the building be totally cleaned out when the children leave on the last day. Children are sitting in bare classrooms feeling lost and cheated, and not one Church official on any level has even addressed the closing with them. I have seen the anguish and anger the families feel for the disrespectful way that they have been treated. These feelings are justified. The Diocese has shown no compassion for the loss, no interest in communicating with the families and little respect for all involved. As a lifelong Catholic, I am ashamed of what I have observed during the past few months. This should have been handled in a much more humane manner. The worst part is that good people are losing faith. Lost souls are a grave matter of importance. At the very least, the St. Mary family deserves an apology for the way it has been treated. It wouldn’t heal the wounds, but it would demonstrate a little much-needed humility on the part of the Diocesan leadership. -- Ceil Masella, Columbus
