Rich -v- The Philippines Oh my! Can you just imagine? All the people gathering - celebrating that they have just won the bid - £90 milllion for some artwork - some of which they will no doubt recoup when they arrange to display these works of art. Not to mention the all the people gathering for the party being thrown by the people who have sold the artwork & are now reaping the rewards. And the auction house - wow theyve made a bob or two! Oh gosh - I can imagine other gatherings! More people gathering, yes they are celebrating having won the auction for a rare gem stone- £51.7 million. And another gathering, celebrating again the riches gained from the sale of this rare gem at auction. And, of course, another auction house having made another pretty penny. Imagine how pleased they must all be, chinking their wine glasses, celebrating their newly gained material possessions, monies, and the benefits thereof. BUT THIS, I DO NOT HAVE TO IMAGINE. THIS IS THE REAL WORLD. These desperate people gathering. ELEVEN MILLION PEOPLE IN THE PHILIPPINES. AND THEY HAVE LOST! Almost total devastation: no homes or even shelter; everything gone - no material possessions; families wiped out; the struggle to find water & food; no sanitation; dead bodies everywhere; and the first signs of disease in the survivors & no medicines. Aid barely able to get through. I dont think I have ever been left with such a bitter taste in my mouth. Ill doubt Ill ever see, or be able to afford to go and see, these works of art or the precious gem & they wont make a difference to my life. But I am so proud of the £13 million raised in the UK in its first 24 hours. Proud to be a part of it. And although I can maybe only gave a little, I know that added all together it can make a difference... ..and I will, with pride, and probably in awe, watch the people of the Philippines gather, pull together, to rebuild and grow again.
