Richard Rohrs Daily Meditation Image of God Who Created Whom? Thursday, July 10, 2014 In Genesis 1:26 God says, “Let us make humanity in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves.” It’s quite interesting that the plural form is used. It seems almost an intuition of what we will later call the Trinity. One could see this as an early capsulation of what finally becomes the revelation of God as community, God as relationship itself, a God who for Christians is seen as a mystery of perfect giving and perfect receiving, within and without. I personally take this pattern of God as the central template and pattern of all reality. God is both face and interface, with an infinite capacity for meaning, depth, mystery, and communication, and it is we who are created in this Divine design, and not the other way around. This is, I sincerely believe, the absolute core of the Judeo-Christian revelation. So both Yahweh and Jesus are indeed the very essence of what we mean by being “personal.” This is not to deny that God is Transpersonal too—Energy, Life Itself, Formlessness, Consciousness, Ground of Being, Truth, Love, and so forth. Probably our metaphors for the Holy Spirit as a dynamic flow, fire, water, and descending dove were given to us to keep this dynamism and movement alive. Our personhood makes it possible to understand and relate to the exact same personhood in God; we have a built-in capacity for the divine (capax Dei). We were created with an inherent capability and desire for connection, communication, intimate love, forgiveness, and mutuality. It is our “natural law,” actually our “first nature,” and I think any good psychologist would back this up.
