Richmond Council has voted 6 to 2 for a Walmart store at Garden - TopicsExpress

Richmond Council has voted 6 to 2 for a Walmart store at Garden City Road and Alderbridge in Richmond, with Councillor Chak Au and myself opposed While some councillors boasted that they had been hard negotiators, durng the course of negotiations the Walmart store increased from 100,000 sq. ft. to 160,000 sq ft. The whole development is a fake. An environentally sensitive wildlife corridor disappeared under a parking lot with a fake park on the roof.A long strip of protected Envronmentally Senstive Area along the north side of Alderbridge will be replaced with a fake ESA , comprised of a manicured row of weed trees. The big box store itself will be designed as a fake neighbourhood shopping centre with small stores deliberately arranged around the big box store to hide he act that it is really a destination shopping centre. As a destination shopping centre it will draw traffic from all across Richmond and even South Vancouver. With the Canada Line a kilometer away, it promotes the car rather than public transit. It will draw customers from the town centre, whichs too far away for comparative shopping, a Walmart objective. Ironically, there are locations a Walmart could locate in the downtown core as Sears is closing, partly due to Walmart, and the Lansdown Shopping Centre has vacancies. Supporters boasted about the jobs Walmart will produce when in reality high paying jobs at Sears and other stores will be replaced by low paying jobs at Walmart.
