Rick Baumann, MD here…Sports medicine surgery focuses on joint preservation and soft tissue repair, often through minimally invasive techniques and arthroscopy. Earlier this week, I was ecstatic to see this young lady back in the office. She is pain free and wishes to return to full duty at work. The MRI shows a massive area of cartilage and bone injury, about 1/3 of the weight-bearing surface of her inner knee thighbone. If I had seen this earlier, I could have fixed the injury with screws to keep her native bone. The surgery photo shows a donor graft, in blue, of cartilage and bone. The area was so large I needed to use her thin surface of outer cartilage to fill the area around the center. It was my goal and I am hopeful that we have put off a certain knee replacement surgery for many years!
