Ricky Robinson – the National Development Manager for SAS – is keen to run a three day Dinghy Instructor’s Course at HMYC. Ricky has been trained by ISAF to host these courses, and has run 7 of these courses across four SAS regions, with positive feedback each time. Details of the SAS Dinghy Instructor’s (DI) course which he will run are: The SAS DI course is part of the SAS National Training Scheme which is recognised by ISAF – more info at sailing.org.za/training/2-scheme The Current format of the course is condensed into an intensive 3-day course which starts on a Friday at 8am and continues until 6pm each day ending on the Sunday evening. This is to ensure that all Practical and Theory aspects of the Course can be covered without having to spread the course over two weekends. Participants must be older than 16 and be able to sail competently. SAS Dinghy Instructor (DI) Certificates will be issued only if candidates have completed and passed: Level1 first aid; Samsa powerboat ticket or SAS Day Skipper; SAS safety boat operator’s ticket; 3 day SAS instructor course; and have 24 hours of supervised instructing logged. (this can be done subsequent to doing the course). SAS does issue course completion certificates after completion of the DI course. Please note: The SAS Safety boat course is a full day course teaching and testing the practical aspects of handling a safety boat and providing assistance to small craft in a safe manner to ISAF recognised standards. As a follow on to the DI course, participants may want to attain the Catamaran Instructor or Keelboat Instructor’s Endorsement, which is each a full day course requiring experience and competency in the category being applied for. Possible dates for this course are the 6-8 March, or the 13-15 March. The cost of the course is R1000 per person, and Ricky will send booking forms to interested parties once there is a consensus on the dates. Payment will need to be in advance by EFT, or at the start of the course itself. If you are interested in attending, please will you reply directly to Ricky – [email protected] – or his cell number is 072 952 5007. This is so that he can get an idea of which date suits most people and can then schedule the course appropriately. He is also prepared to fit in the 1-day (around 6 hour) safety boat course at some point, but that might be best to run on a Saturday. This is separate to the Dinghy Instructor’s course so please, if you are also interested in this, can you tell Ricky either by e-Mail or phoning him on his cell. Ricky Robinson
