Right... That was an awesome three weeks - and speaking of which I cant quite believe how quickly they went, but as they say time flies when your looking at birds and whatever other variants they have of that... Bulgaria and Romania - what eye-openers!! Topped all expectations, and what magic countries to travel within. Kind, hospitable people, some of the best food Ive had in my 20-odd years (including machine-like tomatoes), and conducive to wandering around in shorts and slops - a great combination. After our two-weeks flew by here, Jason and I hopped over to England where we stayed with some mates up in Norfolk, and jammed some local birding there, before heading over to the British Bird Fair on behalf of Birding Ecotours. My first time up at the fair, and what a great experience - so much to take in, and such vast amounts of people. Great chatting to many guys of all different backgrounds and areas, and then of birding in different areas of course! Lastly we were kindly taken in on our last night by a mate in London, before I parted off back home, while runt-like Boyce and Chris headed on to Austria and Hungary for some further scouting... Onto some of the birding highlights of the trip: Obviously accidentally flushing a Bittern was up there, along with laying eyes on such amazing birds such as Blue Rock-Thrush, Nutcracker, numerous woodpeckers including Middle Spotted, Lesser Spotted, Syrian and Grey-headed, Sombre Tit, Firecrest, Little Crake and many more others. Being from the southern hemisphere, the waders, gulls and warblers were of particular interest (all being rather rare down here). It was absolutely brilliant getting onto the likes of Dunlin, Little Ringed Plover, Spotted Redshank, Eurasian Blackcap, Eastern Olivaceous Warbler and 11 species of gull. Partaking in a few twitches in Norfolk was brilliant too - Franklins Gull and Spotted Crake being the two culprits. These are only a tiny portion of the birding highlights, and in conclusion I can only say I hope you dont get Three-toed Woodpecker Boyce - and of course that I cant wait to get back there!! ;)
