Right now I am working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).... It is not an easy place to work, lacking resources, oxygen and equipment just like the rest of the hospital. On Monday, I worked a shift where 3 babies died, one of them had been resuscitated by students earlier in the day and on my shift I resuscitated it twice. All 3 I worked on alone with occasional encouragement from a doctor while the nurses sat on their phones or had disappeared altogether. Everyday these sweet babies steal my heart with their fighting spirits. We cuddle them, feed them and nurse them everyday as well as we can. Today we finally saw nurses beginning to follow our example... Lifting babies delicately instead of like dead chickens, listening to and applying our feedback to their practice. Small steps.... But uplifting all the same. Ill take all the positivity I can here.
