Right now its 5 in the morning and Im rolling along the open road under clear star filled skies on my way to spend Thanksgiving with my older sister and her family and I just got to thinking how thankful I am for so many blessed opportunities I have and have had. Racquetball is one of my favorite sports to play. It is a physical exertion and mental / emotional recharge. After a few weeks at sea our submarine pulled in to Manama (Bahrain). When my watch ended I headed over to the A&W for a burger and rootbeer float then across base to an unmarked building. Inside were 2 glass racquetball courts fully equipped. I picked up a racquet and got in the zone ... I began humming - the echo in the court was wonderful and soon I was singing this hymn at the top of my lungs in rhythm with the play of the ball off the walls. I left so energized, happy and content. A few years earlier I was in teaching in south London. Among my students was a woman (Valerie Buckle) from Jamaica and her daughter. I brought them on the train to church. There in the Wandsworth Common chapel Valerie a newcomer belted out this same song with all her heart. I like symbolism. This chello players wedding band is a symbol of love and commitment. I thought of my own love and commitment that came with a similar band. Marriage can be a wonderful beautiful selfless love. I am humbled and incredibly thankful for my experience. This amazing beautiful vast and varying world is evidence of Gods love and commitment to us. I am awed, humbled and thankful.
