Rigpa’s Spiritual Care Programme is an international training programme started in response to requests from healthcare professionals. The programme’s non-denominational approach emphasises universal spiritual principles that resonate with people from diverse spiritual and cultural backgrounds. It is comprised of online and face-to-face programmes and ‘Professional Education’ opportunities for health and social care professionals and volunteers; it has begun to realise a dream of creating dedicated centres of spiritual care for those facing life difficulties, illness, loss or dying & it hosts international conferences. Professional Education Courses are offered in different formats such as seminars, retreats and online learning. They offer an integrated approach to the emotional and spiritual dimension of both caring for others and caring ourselves as caregivers. Online Learning Programme The Spiritual Care Program offers courses that recognize and nurture a deeper understanding of the emotional and spiritual dimensions of living and dying, and the deeply human aspects of caregiving. Inspired by Sogyal Rinpoches acclaimed classic, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, participants learn how to integrate mindful awareness and compassion into their work and lives, and nurture their sense of wellbeing while caring for others. We welcome you to join our learning community this fall. CEs are available for all professional training courses. September 30 - November 25, 2014 Caring for Others, Caring for Ourselves Walking alongside friends and loved ones facing difficult life circumstances, illness or death can be deeply rewarding and personally challenging. This 8-week online course is open to anyone who has cared for, is caring for or anticipates accompanying a family member or loved one. Participants are supported by experienced instructors and peers who share a similar journey. They learn effective methods to help heal exhaustion and remain present with an open heart. October 2 - November 19, 2014 Cultivating Compassionate Presence This online course is designed to help meet the needs of busy professionals who wish to enhance their skills, deepen insights, and connect more compassionately and authentically with patients and clients. It is especially relevant for those who want to nurture or rejuvenate their own self-care. Professionals will find this course useful as an introduction to or as a continuing support for integrating contemplative resources, such as mindfulness, meditation and compassion, into their work and lives. September 2 - December 21, 2014 Contemplative End-of-Life Care Certificate is also offered yearly, however it commenced on the 2nd September – keep an eye out for it next year. Join a growing global network and learn from leaders in palliative and contemplative care. This program combines 15-weeks of online-learning with an 8-day residential retreat near Ithaca, NY. It brings together authentic and practical contemplative resources with best practices in hospice and palliative care. International Conferences We contribute to the professional dialogue on mindfulness, compassion and spiritual care by organising and partnering with others in major conferences. We are partners in the recurring Buddhism and Medicine Forum (BuddhismAndMedicine.org) as well as in Empathy and Compassion in Society (CompassioninSociety.org)and others. This year’s conference is: Empathy and Compassion in Society November 13 -14, 2014 San Francisco CA. Is compassion a quality that can be cultivated and put into practical use? Care Centres The first of our Spiritual Care centres, Dechen Shying, was opened in April 2009 at the Dzogchen Beara retreat centre in West Cork, Ireland. It is a place for groups and for people facing life difficulties, such as ill-health, loss or life limiting illness, as well as for their families and supporters.
