Rivers PDP Furious over Amaechi Withholding Civil Servants’ Salaries The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State Chapter, expresses worry over the deliberate delay in the payment of salaries of civil servants in the State by Gov. Amaechi. The PDP says it is enraged following the apparent sufferings of the innocent workers, who have dispensed their services during the period, hoping to be remunerated at the end of the months, only to be denied their right of enjoying the fruit of their hard labour by an insensitive All Progressives Congress government led by Gov Amaechi in the State. What could be a justifiable explanation to his action when there has not been any situation that would warrant such, apart from the persistent misappropriation of the State funds in organising APC rallies outside the State and campaigns under the guise of town hall meetings in parts of the State? Our checks revealed that as at today, September 11, 2014, some banks which include First Bank, First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), IBTC, and Access Bank, among others, are still holding on to the salaries of civil servants, as according to our sources, the necessary remittances have not been made to them by the relevant authorities of Rivers State government, so could not pay the respective civil servants who have accounts with them, coupled with the huge debt burden on these banks following unpaid loan facilities to the Rivers State government. To the PDP, this is most unacceptable and unjustifiable especially in a State where huge allocations are received from the federal government with an upsurge of internally generated revenue, in addition to billions of naira loans collected almost quarterly by the governor in slick alliance with some members of the State House Assembly, who have become the governor’s glove puppets. While sympathizing with the affected civil servants over their avoidable Amaechi-inflicted plight, the Party calls on them to vote out APC in the coming elections in the State, assuring them that the PDP as a responsible and sensitive party, will ensure that salaries of civil servants and other public servants are paid as at when due. The PDP therefore, urges Governor Amaechi to urgently approve and release funds for the immediate and prompt payment of the affected civil servants to ameliorate their sufferings in the face of the biting economic hardship pervading the State as a result of bad governance. Signed: Jerry Needam Special Adviser, on Media to State PDP Chairman, Bro. Felix Obuah Thursday, September 11, 2014.
