Roads Minister Duncan Gay began changing the process in May when he allowed 12-tonne two-axle rigid trucks and trailers between 4.5 and nine tonnes to be checked by independent inspectors. He said the widening regulation checks would increase the number of available inspection sites and be more convenient for truck drivers. The minister is due to extend the scheme on August 19 and announce that heavier trucks could be checked by private inspectors. Read more:
