A citizen has the right to face his accusers. A citizen has the right to see all the evidence gathered. If a politician wants to fall on his sword for the public good it is essential that his or her rights and any legal questions be settled before leaving office. Never ever come clean while falling on ones sword if there is any chance a criminal case could be filed later. It is self-incrimination and can be used against the politician in a future trial. Hire a lawyer to act as a spokesperson to announce the resignation to avoid the temptation to answer questions.
