Robert Jenkins Professor Christina Lavergne 14SP ENG101 English Composition I (025) March 27,2014 A Penny for Your Thoughts Dr. Horrible Sing Along is a musical film with a hero and villains. Captain Hammer sings everyone is a hero in his or her own way. He is wrong; everyone is a hero in his or her mind. Some people have the ability to justify any deed that they do. Penny is the true heroine, She is admired, selfless, and she was relentless; she lost her life for the homeless this places Penny as the heroine, the only hero in this film. Penny is one of central characters in the musical, along with Dr. Horrible, Captain Hammer, and Bad Horse. Penny is nothing like them. Penny is admired for her beauty, character and work ethic. When Penny enters the story, the scene is in a laundry mat with washing her clothes. Billy a.k.a. Dr. Horrible dreams of using his Freeze Ray to stop time, so that he can waltz with her throughout the laundry mat, and even though Captain Hammer is a tool he called Penny his girlfriend and was willing to sleep with her twice. This introduction gives us an example of how Penny is loved to death. She is so angelic, but that is not all she is helping the homeless. Penny is community activist with selfless goals in mind, but with Bad Horse holding the reins behind the scene, bad things will escape the stable. Billy seeks to join The Evil League chaired by Bad Horse. Billy needs to obtain wonderflonium in order to modify the Freeze Ray into the Death Ray, to meet the leagues minimum blood requirements. While trying to steal the wonderflonium he sees Penny in an alley soliciting signatures for her petition to while she sings “Caring Hands”. Penny is so sweet and caring, as she tries to get anybody to sign her petition to get the city to donate a vacant house to the homeless. Suddenly the van that had the chemical was in speeding towards Penny. Billy uses his remote control to stop the van, but Captain Hammer barges in, as if he was the one to stop the van. Captain Hammer pushes Penny into the trash. The three of them: Penny, Hammer and Billy in sync sing “ A mans Must’ Do” Captain Hammer and Penny instantly become attracted to each other and become a couple. Much to the dismay of Billy, who is able to see how shallow Captain Jerkoff, is. Penny however is totally oblivious to his many shortcomings, at this point in the story.. Penny towards the end started to see the real Captain. Billy confides in Penny that he aspires to join The Dark Horse Evil League. Penny asked Billy incredulously, isn’t Dark Horse The Thoroughbred of Sin. Captain Hammer is tall, muscular, and handsome. He has the outward appearance of a super hero, but he is vain, insensitive and he objectifies women. Captain Hammer is not hero material. Penny influences him to sign the petition, to join the press conference, and to announce that the city gave the house to the homeless. Captain made no effort to hide the fact that one of the homeless smell like in the song “Everyone’s A Hero In their Own Way”. Penny sat among all the people, and she did not act like she smelled something bad. That is a real hero, making others feel comfortable. Penny knew of Dark Horse and his evil deeds, but that did not stop her from her goals of helping the homeless. What Penny did not know was that Dark Horse would indirectly cause her death. Dark Horse represents The Secret Society, The Illuminati, and The 1%. The League that by Bad Horses messengers that his application was received in “The Song Bad Horse” “tells Billy they need a heinous crime, a show of force, a murder would be nice of course, signed bad Horse.” Billy did not know that “Everything He Ever” wanted would cause the death of his unrequited love, Penny. Penny’s song could be anybody’s song. “Here’s a story of a girl who grew up lost and lonely …and every drop of rain will keep you growing seed you’re are sowing in the grown So keep your head up, Billy-Buddy.” This is a most heroic and sad moment. Penny is encouraging Billy to do what will ultimately kill her. Penny’s efforts win her The House for the homeless, a press conference and a small amount of fame, as one of the headlines read. Captain Hammers girlfriend kill by Dr.Horrible. Some would say that Penny was only a device in the story. “A woman in refrigerators” (Gail Simone). The contention is that every female super hero is raped, murdered or somehow disenfranchised. This however was not the case with Penny. Penny was empowered by her desire to change the life of others, for the better. Penny is relentless the hero of the story and she would be if this story were placed in a real city, where the homeless populations are increasing. To have a beautiful white lady, who sings well is as an advocate for the unfortunate could advance the effort to put people in homes, not shelters. There are homeless activist in Charleston, but none of them look like Penny. There is a place for ladies like Penny in South Carolina. The word on the street is that, Penny works for Bad Horse and that she manipulated Billy by faking her death. This seems plausible, because in one of the letters, the writer asked Billy “who is her.” The writer of the letter could have been Bad Horse sending Billy to meet Penny. Penny showed up in an alley, an alley. What is a sweet girl like Penny doing there getting petitions signed? This is a possible scenario, but as the story is written Penny is the true heroine in Dr. Horrible. A penny for your thoughts. To sum this up, Penny shows that she is admirable, selfless and relentless. Captain Hammer, Bad Horse and Dr. Horrible surround her as the villains. Everyone is not a hero; people can be a hero in their own mind. Dr. Horrible Sing Along is an awesome story with characters worth exploring. This is film worth watching over and over. “BALLS”
