Robin Williams is the reason I am who I am. His passing has ripped my heart to pieces and it has taken a lot of tears and pain to sit here and really write the words. Since I can remember Robin Williams was my answer to who is your hero? who do you look up to? etc. He was my mentor, my hero, my idol. All I ever wanted to be was him. I admired everything about him that I saw. His astounding wit, the genuine happiness that he brought to nearly every endeavor, his impeccable comedic timing, his effortless way of making anyone laugh, his complete abandon to his craft and the moment. He was an eternal geyser of genius. Never even knowing him, only seeing what I could of him, he shaped me as a person. I was in awe of his notorious disregard for the rules that generated such brilliance. He didnt so much think outside of the box, its more that he never saw a box to begin with; I wanted to be as spontaneous, joyful and clever. For a long time I aspired to follow in his footsteps to try to become a fraction of what he inspired in me and to give a fraction of what he gave to others with his work. In high school I wrote to Juilliard for an application just to walk his walk. My mom disagreed with my choice and tried to convince me instead to go to Allan Hancock College to start where he started. Neither panned out due to my own self confidence battles, but I wished and hoped to be as great and as creative for the world as Robin. Hearing the news yesterday stripped me bare. I havent really stopped crying since and even when I do I know my heart will still hurt. My hero is gone and I am sad. ..or maybe he is just blinking for an exceptionally long period of time. Thank you for all you gave Robin. You touched so many who you will never know, but who will keep you close in their hearts. “Thank you...for gracing my life with your lovely presence, for adding the sweet measure of your soul to my existence.”
