Rodney Croome does not seem to understand that marriage already is “equality” (Letters, 5/7). As Federal Court Justice Jayne Jagot ruled in February, marriage is not discriminatory. Every man has an equal right to marry a woman, and vice versa. Other committed relationships, such as two loving sisters who live together, are not marriage. The federal Labor government gave FamilyVoice and other groups a written undertaking before the 2010 election that it would retain the man-woman definition of marriage in the Marriage Act if re-elected to govern for the next three years. Notwithstanding the vote of the 2011 national Labor conference to change that definition, the federal government’s promise should stand until this year’s election.
