Roland Ward Jones, Jr. , age 91, passed away March 5, 2014 at his residence in Lula, MS. He was born in Grenada, MS on February 3, 1923 to Roland Ward Jones and Esther Wellman Jones. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Robert Lewis Jones III, his wife Adele Neill Jones, and his son Dr. Roland Ward Jones III. He is survived by his son Robert Lewis Jones (Jackie), three grandchildren, Robert Lewis Jones, Jr. (Nicole), Jennifer Jones Moran (Hugh), and Margaret Elizabeth Jones and three great-grandchildren, Dylan Keane Moran, Caitlin Elizabeth Jones and Robert Lewis Jones III. Before entering the Navy in WWII, he taught Physics at Southwestern University (now Rhodes College) in Memphis. He had graduated with honors from that University. Upon joining the Navy, as a Lieutenant (jg) he went to MIT and Princeton to study radio and radar. Then came some more work as a student in the ANRA school at Gainsville, Ga. He then had two more months of school at GCA (ground controlled approach) before he took the job as an instructor at the school until his discharge. He felt that GCA had a “real future”, however instead of going to Bell Labs, he decided he was far more interested in his farm in Lula where he spent the rest of his life. He was a gregarious and intelligent man of the utmost integrity and ethics and will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him. Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday March 8, 2014 at Elmwood Cemetery, 824 South Dudley St, Memphis, TN, 38104. In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial to the organization of your choice. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, MS is handling the arrangements.
