Rome wasnt built in a day so Im giving it five days. City-sploring last night took me to some interesting off the beat spots in the city. Interestingly, the area to the left of the Termini (Romes largest central depot) does have a feel of the Joubert Park taxi rank so I can imagine most Cape Townians shrieking in horror and clutching tightly to their Louis Vitton handbags when they first land in Rome. (There is just as much piss and grime on the streets around the Termini.) Taxies cram up almost all the space. The streets are badly lit. The only major difference between Joubert Park taxi rank and the Termini is that the White folks dont look ashen white when theyre at the Termini. Today, I go on a guided walking of most cultural / historical sites. Ill be throwing my coin in the Trevi Fountain. I have a photo of Mac Maharajs left hand to put into the mouth of the La Bocca del Verita (a concrete statue with an open mouth. Legend has it that if a liar puts his left hand in the statues mouth, the hand will be eaten). Tomorrow, is a full day tour of the Vatican and Coloseum. I can confirm that Rome makes better pasta than Venice. (And if any one has an uncle in the Jozi restaurant business let them know that the garlic in an Arabiatta pasta needs to be finely chopped)
