Rose Marie says my number is 9 and I should write 9 things about myself. Here goes: 1. I love Kentucky Fried Chickens drumsticks. With their mashed potatoes and gravy, Im in Heaven. Their other side orders give me the runs. 2. I still pine for my first love, Laurie Mattioli. Soft brown hair, deep brown eyes. I truly hope she is happy and well wherever she is. 3. I whispered the names of her grandparents into my Moms ear before she died. She never knew who they were or where in Poland they lived. 4. As a kid, I delivered the evening Chicago American from my 24 bike. 5. I learned all the Latin responses to become an altar boy and couldnt finish the program because of a six-week convalescence due to a tonsillectomy that almost killed me. I served at my first Holy Mass at age 18 at Holy Cross HS. That was thanks to Tom Dolan who desperately wanted to get out of homeroom and volunteered us. 6. I wasnt proud of being Polish when I was a kid. It was behind the Iron Curtain and communist and all. Id tell a white lie and say that my grandparents nationality was Austrian. 7. I always wanted a dog but was given baby chicks at Easter instead. Then one Saturday in late Summer my Uncle Chester came and began sharpening my Dads ax. I didnt catch on until my sister Claudia refused to eat the roast chicken, our Sunday dinner. 8. I was honored to be the student speaker at a DePaul Fund Raising Dinner. I was seated and smoked next to the president of the Chicago Chapter of the American Cancer Society. My speech was about volunteerism and it included snippets about working Chicago precincts as a Young Republican. Mayor Richard J. Daley refused to shake my hand afterwards. I get the last laugh - Im still alive. 9. Some of the best days of my life were spent being a crewman on a 36 racing sloop named Javelin out of Belmont Harbor. Then my bride discovered that other wives didnt mow the lawn while their husbands were busy sailing. You gals have such big mouths. (And, Rose Marie, I too stockpile food and put my ice cream in the microwave.)
