Round 11 Match Results – Week 2 1st XI vs Poowong/Loch – lost by 35 runs It was a case of too many passengers on the weekend as we were unable to capitalise on Neville Toms and Sam Hughes’s fantastic opening stand to chase down the required total of 288. Batting in hot and dusty conditions, our openers showed great concentration and discipline to register their 4th century opening stand for the season. Unfortunately just 3 overs before team, Hughes showed a rare lapse for the day and was caught behind for a hard-earned 41 with the score reading 1-135. At the other end Toms was as his swashbuckling best as he dispatched the bowlers to all parts of the field. Disappointingly the dismissal of Hughes lead to a devastating and ultimately game-changing collapse of 5-24 in just 10 overs. Toms stood strong as his teammates fall around him, and somehow found time to bring up a well-earned century amidst the carnage. With the game seemingly over, a late counter-attack from the lower order brought the hopes of victory back to the fore but sadly late contributions from Darcy O’Connor, Jack Hughes and Jason Kennedy were not enough to stave off victory as we fell short by just 35 runs. Massive credit must go to Nifty Neville Toms who eventually fell for 123 after batting for over 4 hours in 35+ degrees – it was gutsy stuff but sadly not enough blokes were willing to tough it out with him. We now have a massive challenge to bounce back this week against MDU at the Leongatha turf. 2nd XI vs Poowong Loch – won by 130 runs. It was a satisfying victory for the B’s with a fantastic team contribution across the board. Looking to defend and imposing 327, things started well with Nicko Arnup once again getting amongst the top order, snaring 2 quick wickets to have the opposition on the back foot at 2-10. There was an 80-run rally for the 3rd wicket however, but a lightning quick Blake Van Rooy run-out soon sparked an ongoing collapse as the final 8 wickets fell for 90 runs. Arnup was the pick of the bowlers with 3-32 off 17, but he was well supported by a disciplined effort from all Cougar bowlers. Sammy Turner backed up his 40 runs with a solid 2-34 off 10, whilst Senior did likewise with 2-23 off 8. Stevie Anderson and Blake Van Rooy each snared singles whilst centurion Matt Boswell, Paris Buckley and Rachel Brown all were miserly with their figures. Well done on the great win lads! 3rd XI vs Inverloch – won by 236 runs Having already claimed victory in the first week, the Cougar lads resumed carefree and ready for action with veteran Pete Kennedy (73) and youngster Ben Perry (63) resuming their places at the crease. With victory already assured, it was a rare occasion in which we were able to pursue the chase of personal milestones. All eyes were on the two as they sought their centuries, but unfortunately PK was unable to get there being trapped infront for 81. With skipper Lachie Hughes joining Perry at the wicket, they slowly grafted their way toward the magical 3 figures. Despite giving a few chances, Perry edged closer until he was able to strike one for 3 bring up his maiden ton. At just 13 years of age, Benny would have to go down as the youngest centurion in KLRSL history and possibly that of the LDCA. Having seen his job done, Hughes retired to allow others a chance of a hit. Soon too Perry was dismissed for a fantastic and mature 135, leaving Tom Dudley and Alvis Piksons to see out the innings. Declaring and having another trundle, Andrew Clark and Sammy Wentwoth started things steadily before young Dylshan Clark took to the attack. Not wanting to be outdone by his classmate Perry, Dylshan bowled with flight and control to snare an impressive 3-20 off 6 overs. Alvis Piksons and Michael Green also snare a wicket apiece and when stumps were drawn on the game, Inverloch were sitting at 5/74. Fantastic effort from our 3rds – well done lads! For the first time in recent memory, we’ve had 3 centurions from all 3 grades in the one round. This is a phenomenal achievement and we’d like to congratulate Nifty, Boz and Benny Boy on a job well done!
