Roy Cropper is going to become the talk of Coronation Street when he’s charged with assaulting Gary Windass. The builder ends up in hospital nursing severe injuries after clashing with Roy in the middle of his cafe but before anyone thinks the usually mild-mannered resident has lost the plot, Roy actually thinks he’s defending his business after disturbing an intruder. Desperate for cash Gary breaks into Roy’s Rolls to steal his takings, but he doesn’t count on Roy being there & putting up a fight. Their neighbours are shocked when Roy is arrested & later charged with assault. He escapes a prison term & gets community service instead, much to Roy’s horror. Returning to the cobbles, he says: The legal system has proven it’s totally inadequate. It’s not right at all, there was a security guard charged with actual bodily harm & got a 10 month custodial sentence. I’ve committed a violent crime, I deserve to be in prison. But Roy’s neighbours side with him over Gary. Chesney admits: Roy is a decent bloke. If Gary hadn’t been breaking in this would never have happened. & Norris adds: That lad has been nothing but trouble.
