Rumors have been going around all morning with conflicting information. Here are the facts. This deal was signed in 2012, but due to the large opposition to the deal, both within and without the Conservative base, Prime Minister Harper did not ratify the deal when he first had a chance to only one month later. In the mean time there has been a court case and an appeal. The Hupacasath First Nation launched the court case in 2013 to stop this deal, and the courts eventually rejected this case. However, in June of 2014 the HFN launched an appeal to that decision. This appeal is still in the courts and a decision is not expected until a later date. This means that if the courts rule in favour of the HFN, this decision by Harper could be deemed unconstitutional. Today, the Conservative cabinet made the decision to ratify this trade deal despite the fact that the case is still in the courts. At the moment, we are not sure what we can do to stop this decision, but we are investigating our options. In the coming days you will receive more information from us regarding the next steps for this campaign. Regardless of whether or not we can stop this trade deal, we will make sure the Conservatives pay the price for ratifying this secretive and binding trade deal that threatens our democratic independence.
