Rural/Metro announced today that is has received the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) Certificate of Accreditation. “Meeting these rigorous standards and receiving this accreditation is a testament to our 500 plus employees who serve the community of San Diego night and day providing exceptional emergency medical services,” said Michael Simonsen, Rural/Metro’s Director of Public Affairs. “This was an exhaustive process and we couldn’t be happier to receive the honor.” The accreditation signifies that Rural/Metro has met the "gold standard" determined by the ambulance industry to be essential in a modern emergency medical services provider. These standards often exceed those established by state or local regulation. The CAAS standards are designed to help increase operational efficiency and decrease risk and liability across the entire spectrum of the organization. The accreditation process included a comprehensive self-assessment and an independent external review of Rural/Metro. This independent process provides verification to the city of San Diego and its citizens that quality care is provided to the community. “Our high performance, state of the art, dynamic operation provides quality medical service to the citizens and visitors of this great city without any public subsidy,” Simonsen said. “We are proud to have been part of this community for the past 16 years and look forward to serving for many additional years to come.” Rural/Metro is a national private-sector leader in medical transportation responding to more than 120,000 calls for help a year throughout the city of San Diego. Rural/Metro was originally selected during a competitive bid process in 1996. Rural/Metro’s contract was extended twice before being selected again during another competitive bid process in 2009.
