Rushing home from school, I decide to hop on the bus because the distance is short. I have a feeling that inspectors are around the corner but decide to take chance. And then there they are. Two serious, no nonsense bus inspectors come on board. I have enough time to head to the ticketing machine and clip my bus card, and just as I do so, one inspector spots me. He comes straight to my seat and says that I clipped my card too late. He pulls out his fine tickets and asks me for my ID. Inspector: Madam, can I have your ID. Me: Why? Inspector: Because you clipped your card when the bus had already started to move Me: Oh, that. Well I just got into the bus and was on phone. Wanted to settle first so that I can clip my card. Inspector: (He is not buying my story). Well, I dont care. You clipped too late. Me: I am having a stressful day...my son is not well. Inspector: I dont care. Me: I swear, I was going to clip my card Inspector: (Unmoved) I dont care. Me: Sigh! Inspector: Can I have your ID? Me: I dont have it. Inspector: I need your ID to get your details. Me: (Silent. Quick thinking) What? Inspector: I need your ID Me: How much is the fine? Inspector: 700Kr Me: (Doing a quick mental conversion into Kenya shillings. That is around 10,000 ksh) Inspector: Madam, I need your ID! Me: But I clipped my card. Yes, I was late but I still clipped it. Why should I pay the full fine, similar to someone who neither has a card nor has clipped it? Inspector: (Losing patience) Because you clipped it late...which means you didnt intend to clip at all! Me: (He is right) I am sorry about that. I always clip my cards. Can I get off with a warning, for today, please? Inspector: No! Me: (Pulls the tears card. The oh little-female-me) But...please...(voice trails off) Inspector: (He leans in and lowers his voice). Ok! For today because the distance was short but always make sure you clip your card, ok? Me: Ja, tusind tak! (phew) I hop off the bus. Thankful for this close encounter and for the understanding inspector. It could have gone worse. Heading off to pick up my bicycle. Buses are not for me!
