Russia has confirmed that it has refused to sell to China the Tupolev Tu-22 (NATO: Blinder) supersonic strategic bombers it requested. China wants to replace its more than 100 Xian H-6K bombers (Chinese version of the Tupolev Tu-16 Badger) which are vulnerable to current US and Russian air defense systems. Chinas own development of a replacement strategic bomber has encountered setbacks particularly with the engines which have always been a chronic problem in Chinas aviation industry.
