Russia is again the Evil Empire. Israel still enjoys a special relationship with the US, receiving $3 billion in cash aid, hundreds of millions more in non cash subsidies. Americans have more blood on their hands than they can ever hope to wash off. Instead of the West Bank, Golan Heights, and Lebanon, Isreal is massacring children and civilians in Gaza. Are we reliving the 80s? Great Scott! Only a DeLorean could complete this return to the Cold War. Except this cold war is not defined by an overall absence of conventional aggression, but instead by an enthusiasm about murdering civilians in cold blood. President Obama condemns the attacks on UN schools and refuges in Gaza, but stops short of condemning the perpetrator of the attacks - Israel. As if attacks against Arabs and Muslims occur passively, without agency. Another fact reminiscent of the 80s. George Orwells 1984 described a dystopia in which language is reengineered to permit collective dissonance, and wherein inconvenient facts are relegated to the memory hole, thereby lending falsified legitimacy to state propaganda with respect to its grievous crimes. Point is, we ought to stop reporting and viewing the news as if events are happening in a vacuum. We have agency. We are colluding with terrorists in Israel, Iraq, Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Colombia, and in Northern Virginia. It is neither cute nor romantic to want to go back to bygone eras. The reason it is called the past is because we were supposed to have moved on. When we fail to move on, we suffer stasis. And denial. And delusion. And, finally, criminality. The more time goes by, and the more we try to resist the future, the guiltier we become. And there is no escaping that. Not even in a DeLorean.
