Russia was the only team out of the 32 qualifying nations with a roster made up entirely of players who live and work in their home country. Teams including Ivory Coast, Uruguay and Ghana only had one player on their 23-man squads who spent his regular season playing in his home country’s leagues. The Financialist What lessons can we learn from this WC and the incomprehensible humiliation of Brazil, a country whose DNA is inextricably linked to football supremacy over decades? Beyond the technical and tactical discussions of the experts (which I am not) and the screams of fans for their respective teams (which I am), we really need to stretch our minds to understand better the economics and politics of sport and sporting organisations and the impact on national brands. Organisations like FIFA probably earn more than the GDP of many countries combined and so the notion of all is fair in love and football (or cricket etc) is not simply not so. We need at the very least to understand the game (business), how these trans-global structures have morphed over the years and what the playing field is like for regions which make up developing or emerging nations. Further, without investing and investment in our intellectual property, we will continue to lose our raw material (talent) to the developed world and add value to their economies and businesses. Food for thought!
