Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree recognising Crimea as a sovereign and independent state, officials say. (BBC) Sovereign maybe, independent not. 70% of its income came from Kiev, and only produces 10% of its energy needs. A practical, not political statement. Living here in Bulgaria, really aware that small populations can never produce the taxes needed to pay for services. Slightly different as Bulgaria is a comparatively big country with just over 7m population, but it has left me wondering what the basic population level is to build a viable social state (leaving aside oil states). The roads here are terrible, unless EU sponsored, and no one expects snow ploughs, and the schools and even Burgas airport just close when the snow comes. God knows when they will ever have the money to pull down all those old Soviet factories littered through the country, which must be dangerous structures now.
