Russias illegal annexation of Crimea and the new sanctions announced yesterday by President Obama. Russia’s decision to annex Crimea is invalid under international law and will not be accepted by the United States and the rest of the international community. I commend President Obama’s decision yesterday to ramp up the costs President Putin and those closely linked to him will have to pay for continuing to push a policy of aggression and illegal interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs. The impact of sanctions will be felt even more forcefully as Russia’s credit rating is downgraded and its standing in the world is diminished. The U. S.A. continue to stand with the people of Ukraine as they seek a peaceful and democratic future and further actions by Russia to undermine Ukraine’s freedom to choose its own path forward will, as President Obama has said, be met by increasingly punitive sanctions.
