S-T-R-E-T-C-H!! PIRIFORMIS is a deep muscle located between the gluteal (buttock) muscles. Along with other hip rotators, piriformis helps to stabilise and rotate the hip. Strong and flexible hip rotators keep hip and knee joints properly aligned during activity, such as sudden twists lunges or squats. Piriformis syndrome is pain deep in the buttock caused by a tight piriformis muscle compressing the sciatic nerve. Stretching and strengthening this muscle can greatly reduce pain. An easy way to stretch is by sitting in a chair crossing one leg over the other, resting the ankle on the opposite leg. By pressing gently on the knee and leaning forward, you will feel a mild stretch in the hips and buttock area. Alternatively, a more intense stretch can be achieved by lying on the floor, as shown in the diagram below. Please, see your physiotherapist if you have ongoing pain in this area or have more questions.
