S/West NANS disowns association’s president over attack on Fayemi The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone (Zone D), has disowned the national president of the association, Mr Yinka Gbadebo, for a statement credited to him in which he allegedly condemned Governor Kayode Fayemi for killings in Ekiti State. The Public Relations Officer of the zone, Mr Taiwo Bamigbade, who addressed newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Sunday in reaction to the statement said to have been published online through the social media, said Gbadebo’s position as contained in the statement was “baseless and inconsistent.” Bamigbade said: “We have found them baseless and inconsistent, but also have considered them irrelevant at this material time in the face of our struggle for a better educational system not even when he failed to react to the killing of students in Uyo by men of the Nigeria Police and that of Seyi Fasere, a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU).” The NANS president, Gbadebo had condemned what he referred to as politically-motivated killings in Ekiti State, saying the National Human Rights Commission and civil societies should “rise in defence of Ekiti State.” Gbadebo had said: “The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wishes to call on Ammesty International, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), civil societies and well-meaning Nigerians to rise in defence of the downtrodden people of Ekiti State before the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, destroys, kills and ruins them with his inordinate second term’s ambition. “From the umpteenth time, we have watched in aghast as democracy is being threatened by Fayemi in Ekiti. Apart from taking education out of the reach of common people in the only state-owned university, Fayemi has taken governance to a strange level by maiming, attacking and killing anyone perceived to be a threat to his second term’s ambition.” But Bamigbade said “NANS should not be the mouthpiece of politicians as the Yinka Gbadebo-led NANS has turned out to be.” He added that to NANS in the South-West Zone and Nigeria at large, “Dr Kayode Fayemi, the governor of Ekiti State, is an icon of academic and educational development,” and described the Fayemi government as “a focused government and should not be distracted by reactionary statements to gain political attention and cheap popularity.” The body pointed out that Mr Gbadebo goofed, adding that it was unfortunate that NANS is fast losing its credibility and reputation by supporting two candidates at the forthcoming Anambra election. It appealed to Fayemi not to take Gbadebo serious in his action based on the fact that he personally wrote to Fayemi on his style of good governance, educational development, human capital development and reducation in unemployed army of youths. NANS (South-West), however, called on Fayemi to reinstate democratically elected student unions in Ekiti State University and the College of Education in Ikere before the end of the year and extend his laptop per desk initiative to the tertiary level.
