S stands for scanning. When you scan something, you look at it quickly and check it out before you read too much of it. I always have my students scan and preview a reading assignment before they start to read. It makes little connections, called schemas, into the brain and that makes learning easier. It’s like warming up your body before you play sports. You stretch your body and move around a little bit before you play really hard. That way you won’t pull a muscle. Your brain needs a little warm
