SAARC kicks off ! The formal proceedings of the 18th SAARC Summit have started from today. In this regard, a joint-secretary level meeting is underway at the premises of Soaltee Crown Plaza. According to the head of the Regional Organization Department, Yagya Bahadru Hamal today’s meeting of the programming committee will formally endorse the merger and closure of 7 SAARC Centres. Hamal said, four of the 11 SAARC Centres will be merged, while three will be closed. The centres that will be merged are SAARC Forestry Centre, Meteorology Research Centre, Costal Zone Management Centre and Disaster Management Centre. While those that are being closed are SAARC Information Centre, Human Resource Centre and Documentation Centre. Earlier, Secretary-General of SAARC Arjun Bahadru Thapal welcomed the delegates from the member countries to the 18th Summit. With this, the chairmanship of SAARC has also been transferred from the Maldives, who hosted the last SAARC Summit, to the current host Nepal. There is a provision of transferring the chairmanship from one host country to another.
