SAFETY TIPS FOR ALL When approaching a security outpost, please observe these simple rules: • Verify as best you can, who is asking you to stop • Reduce speed, slow down and stop. Never pass without stopping • Be polite, courteous and answer all questions simply. • Do not make or receive phone calls; if using an earpiece remove it. • Switch off or turn down the volume of your car radio and all other audio appliances. • If asked to come down, kindly oblige without protest. • If stopped at night time, switch on the vehicle inner light. • Neither you nor other persons with you should enter into an unnecessary argument with the security operatives or show irritation. • Always have your vehicle papers and driving license with you. • Never carry large amounts of money on your person or in the vehicle. As a general rule: • Avoid outdoor bars, large shopping centers and other public places that attract large gatherings. • Be cautions when you go to your religious/worship centres as they continue to be attractive targets for extremists and terrorists. • Avoid ostentatious celebrations as they attract attention of criminals • Make additional security arrangements if you have to be out late • Plan logistics for all movements well ahead of time making sufficient provision for fuel, water and food while in transit. Reveal your plans only to a trusted family member or friend. • Inter-city road travel in this period presents significant challenges because of quantum of commuters travelling for holidays, and traffic delays are common. Plan your trip to include a potential stop at a half-way point with secure hotel accommodation to avoid being en route after dark. • Remember to have emergency numbers stored in your phones or carried on your person at all times. • Avoid using ATM machines in public or isolated places. • If travelling by road, have the phone numbers of the destination, rest stops, hotel, etc, handy, and check occasionally to ensure there are no surprises, including availability of fuel for the car. • Do not give ride to strangers. • Avoid the temptation to store flammable liquids in the house even in the event of fuel scarcity • Check that fire extinguishers are installed in the right place in your house and are in good working condition • Call your security contact for guidance if in doubt.
