SAGAR AAQIB Haider is an adaptation of Hamlet and the final film of Vishal Bhardwajs Shakespearean trilogy. It is the story of a Kashmiri student who is in the company which believes in violence. His mother (Tabu) finds a pistol in his bag and in order to prevent him to go to Pakistan for training she sends him to Aligarh for studying. Meanwhile his father, a surgeon by profession disappears, which is a euphemism for the authorities picking up people they believe, have information about militants. Its a tragic drama which revolves around a troubled Haider wondering how he can avenge his fathers disappearance or even supposed death. The first half of the movie is almost truly based on the facts, it throws light on the sufferings of Kashmiris. It speaks about AFSPA by referring it as ‘chutzpah’ and the crimes done under the shade of this inhuman act. The whole movie highlights practical facts, it mentions the promise of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at Lal Chock of holding a plebiscite and demilitarising Kashmir which was never fulfilled. It further says neither India nor Pakistan were able to fulfil the conditions of UN resolution. The movie contains a good number of real snaps and videos like of relatives of disappeared, the unrest of 2008 and 2010. It clearly indicates that the Indian armed forces never followed law practically and if they hadnt done this, Kashmir would have been much better. Much data is throughout mentioned in the movie like it mentions 8000 Kashmiris have been disappeared by Indian armed forces and their wives are called half widows because they don’t know are their husbands alive or not. It highlights human rights violation in Kashmir done by security forces since the past two and a half decades and blames United Nations for being silent as the movie shows Kashmiris protesting in front of U.N. office with Shahid Kapoor. Unarmed militants illegally getting killed for one lakh rupees per militant from government and unnecessary bombing of houses of locals has also been mentioned. The whole movie is sad, there is no happiness. No one has peace of mind because of deaths and suffering resulting in mental disorders. The movie mentions army tortures, the unjustified killings of innocent students. It also mentions history of the turmoil in Kashmir by mentioning formation of ‘ikhwani’ groups and their cruel killings. It gives an example of two elephants fighting terming as India and Pakistan and says when two elephants fight only grass gets suffered. The grass has been termed to common Kashmiri people which simply means whether a bullet is made in Pakistan or India, only a Kashmiri is going to be its victim. Besides the love aspect of the movie, the practices shown in the movie like encounters, ambushes, people losing their homes, tortures, disappearances are still common in the highly militarised valley of Kashmir. It declares the revenge is the root cause of misery because revenge leads to revenge not to peace suggesting Gandhijis non violence. The climax of almost all bolywood movies is like villain getting killed and the revenge is taken but this is a bit different. Shahid gets a chance to kill the villain but he doesn’t, giving a message of peace. In the past many bollywood movies have been made on Kashmir but practically nothing was factual. I fell the movie is very good and factual. Nothing has been as real as it has been and at the end it displays thousands have lost their lives in Kashmir and the situation has improved. The idea of the movie is simply outstanding. Being a kashmiri I salute and thank the whole team of Haider for puting the facts under scanner. I also apologise on the behalf of my valley for throwing a kangdi(a hot pot of burning coal) on Shahid in the old city area of the Srinagar. I don’t know the person but i am sure if he knew about the script he would have never don’t such an act. On his behalf also I want to say sorry to you but i think such sort of behaviour from victims of the turmoil can be expected and justified.
