Ok, I finally got information from the police - amazing what a press release can do...first the helicopters - two people were robbed near the recreation center in the park of chains & watches. Police sealed off the park but the perp did what any of us would do - he jumped down over the wall. NYPD choppers were brought in (before they knew he was out of the park. But a continuing search caught up with the guy in front of a restaurant on the SE corner of 45th & 5th - he still had the stolen goods on him...chalk one up for the good guys. The incident between the cops and the female vendors (about an hour after the street fair ended) went like this according to police (off the record) accounts - the women were told to stop vending, the festival was over and the DOS cleaning crew needed to proceed (they blow the sidewalks clean and the trucks collect). the women said no. the police asked for ID and the women refused and one threw a punch at the cop. two or three male relatives jumped in and everyone was tussling on the ground. everyone was taken in and one was held. a review found that the vendors were not part of the festival. Thats the best I can do...
