SALEM, OREGON from Laurel Hines There is an upcoming event of interest to all Salem area animal lovers and environmentalists. The documentary Wild Things, by the Natural Resources Defense Council, will be screened at the Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Library on Thursday, April 3rd, at 6:30 PM. It will be followed by brief presentations by Dr. Robert Beschta of OSU and John Mellgren, an environmental attorney with the Western Environmental Law Center. Dr. Beschta will be speaking about his research on how native top predators help the whole ecosystem. John Mellgren will be providing more information about the USDA Wildlife Serivices and the issues about managing predators. The film is important for animal advocates as well, as in their actions to manage predators at the behest of ranchers and farmers, the USDA agents kill many non target wildlife, along with occasional dogs, often in cruel and horrific ways. The film has won several documentary awards. Please contact me if you need any additional information at laulehines@gmail. You can see a trailer for the film on the NRDC website under Animals.
