SAME ALERT There is a recent wave of telephone scams that involves the suspect posing as federal agents and government employees. The suspect will ask for personal data (social security, bank account, etc) and insist that the information is assisting them with solving a crime. If the victim refuses the suspect has been known to threaten physical violence. They may also tell you a family member has been taken hostage and money needs to be wired over to free them. DO NOT give up any personal information over the phone no matter what the individual threatens or offers. The Department of Homeland Security has set up a task force to combat this problem. If you believe you are the victim of this scam please call Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357 or email them at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0341-file-complaint-ftc. Please also notify us here at the Provincetown Police Department.
