AXA Bus Company provided coach tickets to the 10 spellers to travel from Blantyre to Lilongwe and back. The morning of the finale day started with all the spellers from both Lilongwe and Blantyre gathering to know each other, have some photo shoots and TV interviews at Pacific Hotel where Blantyre learners were being accommodated. After the interviews all the spellers were driven to Steers/Pizza Inn to have lunch before proceeding to the spelling bee venue. Bishop Mackenzie auditorium was almost full to capacity but spellers beaming with confidence and the knowledge of what was at stake were not intimidated. The words were tough befitting a grand finale. The champion race was tougher and it was characterized by several ties and so many tie breaker words had to be commissioned especially in the juniors category. In seniors category the title race was between Tamanda Kamunga of Bwaila Secondary School and Sammi Sequierra of Southend Secondary School, who until then was the defending champion. The junior category was the most entertaining as Bansari Patel of Southend and Hazel Chaguluka of Namiwawa fought head to head to find one who could go to the final round. The spellers in senior category were given tough words like ‘psychoanalysis, ardent , oncologist, agoraphobia, crocodilian and marionette among others. At the end of it all Sammi, representing his South end school managed to defend his title in the seniors category and 10 year old Verina Chatata of Mount Sinai International School triumphed in the juniors category. Apart from the aforementioned prizes, all the finalists went away with Certificates and shoe shopping vouchers worth MK8999.99 from Bata Shoe Company for being in the finals, A1 Biscuits hampers and books. The champion schools were also awarded certificate of achievement for winning the spelling bee. Chisawani Primary School from Thyolo has been given a Coffee maker from Sync IT Solutions for being an outstanding government primary school performer. At the heart of the Spell Master Spelling Bee is the desire to see a Malawian child develop a culture of reading, self-reliance, confidence building and the enjoyment that depth in English vocabulary can offer. With availability of enough resources, Season III of the Spelling Bee which begins in October shall see the project expanding to Zomba and Mzuzu with a vision to give a rural child a chance for exposure.
