SANACO Youth Media Statement for Mpumalanga Provincial Conference on Tuesday 30 September 2014 The SANACO Youth National convened a very successful Mpumalanga SANACO Youth Provincial Conference at Secunda Mpumalanga Govan Mbeki Municipality Sasol Club under the theme “Cooperative enterprises achieve sustainable development for all”. The conference was attended by about 250 delegates including guest. The Executive Mayor Cllr Lindi Masina gave the conference an opening address in welcoming more than 200 delegates and guest who attended the conference. I her opening remarks the Executive Mayor have raised grievous about the growing percentage of land inversion and multiplicity of informal settlement within Govan Mbeki District. She noted that SASOL constitute a major employer within the whole of Mpumalanga and that everyone within the province when looking for employment hope to be absorbed by SASOL. She encourage people around the province to not that inasmuch as production is important within the province, natural resource does not remain in their form in a productive economy and that land as a form of production does not grow. People must identify new economic opportunities with regard to land use. The conference received messages of support from stakeholders and strategic partners such as YCLSA District leadership representative, ANCYL Regional leadership representative, SASCO leadership Provincial representative, COSAS leadership Provincial representative, SACP District Secretary Nhlakanipho Zuma, Council of Churches representative, Traditional Healers Provincial structure representatives. The decision to launch provinces culminated from the resolution of the National Conference of SANACO Youth National that was held early this year around March followed by the National Board Induction and Strategic Planning session which was held on the 26 to 27 September 2014 at Booysens hotel South of Johannesburg. The Conference received an address by the President of SANACO Mr. Lawrence Bale. The president of SANACO provided a very profound and resounding statement of support to the launch of provinces as pillars of the organisation. He further encouraged unitary and responsible leadership to the leadership to be elected to serve in this first SANACO Youth Provincial Board. He further reflected on how historical it should be for the leadership to be elected to lead the province for them being part of a first province to be launched in the whole country. This represent a beginning of new life within the province, he encouraged the SANACO Provincial Structure to give full support to the youth, women and people with disability. The provincial conference further received the address by the MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Honourable Mr. Eric Kholwane. The MEC appreciated the opportunity for him to be invited to form part of this august event he raised a fundamental point regarding the roles facing the government of the African National Congress. He note that despite all the major strides our government have made to liberate our people economically, we still have larger population that remain stuck in poverty. I his assessment the MEC believes the failure to transform or change the structure of the provincial economy to reflect the country’s racial and gender demographics in both the ownership and participation patterns is the core reason why poverty, unemployment and inequality continue unabated. The MEC outlined a concentrated programme for the provincial government implementation of policies and strategies which covers the following areas that benefits cooperatives; Localisation (local content); Industrialisation; Value chain and beneficiation; Infrastructure Development; Skill Development; Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development. As SANACO Youth we vehemently agree with the MEC in identifying the following challenges affecting the cooperatives in the country. That there is inadequate market and product research for cooperatives and That there is poor management and marketing skills for cooperatives to have sustainable growth. That there is a growing tendency of government tenders dependency syndrome by all types of business if not careful cooperatives could be turned into tender brokers. That although the government provide grants in a form of the CIS, that is not sufficient to support the cooperatives to function and the private sector had to play their part in support of cooperatives. Government continue to encourage people to register cooperatives without monitoring whether the already registered are functioning or not and this increase the percentages of the dormant cooperative in the country. As SANACO Youth we appreciate the scientific analysis by the MEC and the commitments he have made in support of the cooperatives in Mpumalanga. We believe that if the government assist the existing cooperative in this province with market research for their products, there will be a huge number of employment creations in this province. SANACO Youth believes on the work in action and less time spent in boardrooms. The conference was officiated by the SANACO Youth National Leadership represented by its National Chairperson Takalani Mmbengeni and the National Deputy Chairperson Lindiwe Simelane and the electoral process was ran by the National Chairperson. The following co-operators were unanimously elected without any contest; Provincial Chairperson Nduduzo Climate Manda Deputy Provincial Chairperson Phindile Sithole Provincial Secretary Mbongeni Malaza Deputy Provincial Secretary Thulasizwe Thomo Provincial Treasurer Phamela Additional Members; Mining and Beneficiation Sector Cracius Shabangu Manufacturing Sector Madoda Mbhazima Environmental and Waste Management Thabo Leboa Burial Societies Sector Phumzile Masemola Services Sector Saint Tau Arts and Culture Sector Lucky Skhosana Agriculture Sector Smanga Lowebu Financial Services Sector Balungile Radebe Consumer Sector Thabo Ntimba Worker Sector Nthabeleng Ramashoai Construction and Engineering Sector Phindile Moyemola This is a leadership outcome of a very constructive and robust deliberated view on who can lead this province to the best interest of all primary cooperatives in the whole province of Mpumalanga.
